The Reason Behind Lord Hanuman's Eleven Faces

According to a traditional legend, there once lived a powerful demon named Kalakarmukha, who is also known as Karakal in certain regional traditions. He possessed eleven faces and performed intense penance to seek the blessings of Lord Brahma

Pleased by his unwavering devotion, Lord Brahma appeared before him and invited him to ask for a boon. The demon first requested immortality, but Lord Brahma explained that such a boon could not be granted. He then asked for a unique blessing—that only a being who assumed an eleven-faced form on the anniversary of his birth would have the power to kill him. Lord Brahma granted this request.

Empowered by this boon, Kalakarmukha became proud and tyrannical. He began tormenting the gods and sages, defeated the celestial armies, and spread fear across the three worlds. Unable to overcome him, the gods approached Lord Vishnu for protection. Lord Vishnu informed them that He was already present on Earth in the form of Lord Rama and advised them to seek Lord Rama's guidance. The gods then approached Lord Rama and explained the danger posed by the demon.

Lord Rama declared that only Hanuman, the remover of all obstacles and revered as Sankat Mochan, possessed the strength to defeat Kalakarmukha. At Lord Rama's command, Hanuman immediately appeared before Him. After listening to the gods' plea and receiving Lord Rama's blessings, Hanuman accepted the responsibility of protecting righteousness and restoring peace.

It is believed that on Chaitra Purnima, which is celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti and is also regarded as the birth anniversary of Kalakarmukha, Hanuman assumed His magnificent Ekadash Mukhi (Eleven-Faced) form to fulfill the condition of Lord Brahma's boon. When Kalakarmukha learned of this, he marched against Hanuman with his vast army. Filled with divine power, Hanuman swiftly destroyed the demon's forces. He then seized Kalakarmukha, carried him high into the sky, and slew him, thereby fulfilling the condition of the boon, restoring peace, and protecting the gods.
