Shiva Manas Strotra Path

The Shiva Manasa Puja is one of the most profound devotional hymns in the Hindu spiritual tradition. Attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, it transcends the boundaries of ritualistic worship and reveals the essence of inner devotion. The hymn teaches that the highest form of worship is not performed with external objects but within the sanctified space of one's own consciousness. Every offering—whether a jeweled throne, sacred water, fragrant flowers, incense, light, or food—is first imagined in the mind, emphasizing that the purity of intention is more valuable than the material value of any offering.

On the surface, the hymn appears to describe a traditional ritual of worship offered to Lord Shiva. At a deeper level, however, every offering carries symbolic meaning. The jeweled throne represents a heart purified of selfishness and prepared to receive the Divine. The sacred water signifies the cleansing of ignorance and emotional impurities. Sandalwood symbolizes a mind cooled by wisdom and free from the heat of anger and desire. Flowers represent the blossoming of virtues such as compassion, truthfulness, humility, patience, forgiveness, and unconditional love. The lamp symbolizes the light of self-knowledge that dispels the darkness of ignorance, while the food offered to Shiva represents the surrender of every action, achievement, desire, and possession to the Supreme.

श्री शिवमानस पूजा स्तोत्र

॥ अंत से आरंभ तक, बस शिव ही शिव। ॥

रत्नैः कल्पितमासनं हिमजलैः स्नानं च दिव्याम्बरं। नाना रत्न विभूषितम्‌ मृग मदामोदांकितम्‌ चंदनम॥ जाती चम्पक बिल्वपत्र रचितं पुष्पं च धूपं तथा। दीपं देव दयानिधे पशुपते हृत्कल्पितम्‌ गृह्यताम्‌॥1॥ सौवर्णे नवरत्न खंडरचिते पात्र धृतं पायसं। भक्ष्मं पंचविधं पयोदधि युतं रम्भाफलं पानकम्‌॥ शाका नाम युतं जलं रुचिकरं कर्पूर खंडौज्ज्वलं। ताम्बूलं मनसा मया विरचितं भक्त्या प्रभो स्वीकुरु॥2॥ छत्रं चामर योर्युगं व्यजनकं चादर्शकं निमलं। वीणा भेरि मृदंग काहलकला गीतं च नृत्यं तथा॥ साष्टांग प्रणतिः स्तुति-र्बहुविधा ह्येतत्समस्तं ममा। संकल्पेन समर्पितं तव विभो पूजां गृहाण प्रभो॥3॥ आत्मा त्वं गिरिजा मतिः सहचराः प्राणाः शरीरं गृहं। पूजा ते विषयोपभोगरचना निद्रा समाधिस्थितिः॥ संचारः पदयोः प्रदक्षिणविधिः स्तोत्राणि सर्वा गिरो। यद्यत्कर्म करोमि तत्तदखिलं शम्भो तवाराधनम्‌॥4॥ करचरणकृतं वाक्कायजं कर्मजं वा श्रवणनयनजं वा मानसं वापराधम् । विहितमविहितं वा सर्वमेतत् क्षमस्व जय जय करुणाब्धे श्रीमहादेव शम्भो ॥५॥
